The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), India was established on 12th October, 1993 under the Protection of Human Rights Act (PHRA), 1993 as a statutory body for the promotion and protection of human rights as well as generate awareness in the country.

The Commission comprises of Chairperson and five Members including a woman Member. It is supported in its functioning by the five substantive divisions of law, investigation, research, training and administration having specialist officers as part of the secretariat headed by the Secretary General and Chief Executive Officer.

The NHRC, India, conforms with the Paris Principles, adopted at the first international workshop on national institutions for the promotion and protection of human rights held in Paris in October 1991, and endorsed by the General Assembly of the United Nations by its Regulations 48/134 of 20 December, 1993.

The NHRC is an embodiment of India’s concern for the promotion and protection of human rights in line with its Constitution.
Section 2 (1) (d) of the PHRA defines Human Rights as the rights relating to life, liberty, equality and dignity of the individual guaranteed by the Constitution or embodied in the International Covenants and enforceable by courts in India.

The functions of the Commission are stated in Section 12 of the Act. Apart from enquiry and recommending relief into the complaints of violation of human rights due to negligence in the prevention of such violation by a public servant, the Commission also spreads awareness about human rights through its advisories, camp sittings, spot enquiry visits, training, internships, workshops, seminars, conferences, research, media engagements, social media, newsletters and publications.

It has a number of 'Core Groups' including subject experts, senior officers and civil society representatives on various thematic issues related to human rights. The Commission also has a very robust mechanism of Special Rapporteurs and Special Monitors, who visit various shelter homes, observation homes, old age homes, prisons, hospitals, educational institutions and other such public facilities to assess human rights situation on the ground and report to the Commission for making the necessary recommendations for improvements. It studies treaties and international instruments on human rights and makes recommendations for their effective implementation to the Government.

The Commission also engages with people in general for human rights advocacy. Its annual short film competition on human rights since 2015, moot court competitions in law colleges and universities, painting, quiz and debate competitions are some of such important events. ONLINE COURSE FOR TEACHERS ( CENTRE FOR SCIENCE AND ENVIRONMENT )

May 2024 is set to become the 12th consecutive month of breaking monthly temperature records since the pre-industrial era. As extreme weather events become increasingly frequent, the impacts of climate change are being felt worldwide, with some regions more affected than others. In 2023, Asia was the most disaster-prone continent globally.

In this fight against climate change, education has been recognised as a crucial tool. Climate change education is essential not only for understanding the impacts but also for learning how to adapt to an everchanging climate.

The Centre for Science and Environment’s (CSE) Green Schools Programme (GSP) is advancing its mission to deliver relevant and impactful climate education with the launch of the sixth batch of its free Online Course on Climate Change for school teachers (Grades 5 to 12). Following the successful completion of five batches and two onsite Climate Convocations, we invite interested teachers to join the sixth batch by registering on the link below.

Exclusively designed for school teachers, the four-week course will:

  • Add to their understanding of climate change — its science, politics and impacts
  • Offer ideas, tools and methodologies for effective classroom teaching of climate change
  • Bolster confidence to facilitate classroom discussions on the subject within their local context
  • Provide online and onsite opportunities to learn from a cohort of teachers and other professionals in the field.

CSE E-Certificate of Participation will be awarded to all participants who complete the course successfully.

TO PARTICIPATE

Please fill out the following form to register your interest for the sixth batch of the online course on climate change. Since the seats are limited, the confirmation of participation will be on a first-come, first-served basis. The GSP team will contact you if your registration is shortlisted for this batch.

Please note that the course is free for GSP network school teachers. You are requested to send us your response by Saturday, June 8, 2024.

ECO CLUB SUMMER CAMP - MISSION LIFE ( WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY )

As intimated by the Ministry of Education ,it is to mention that certain subjects, skills and capacities should be learned by all students to become good, successful, innovative, adaptive and productive human beings in today's rapidly changing world. These skills include: environmental awareness including water and resource conservation, sanitation and hygiene. Eco Clubs in schools are an intervention' under Samagra Shiksha to enable students takes up meaningful environment- friendly activities and projects, thereby developing sensitivity and an understanding for the ongoing environmental concerns and the right attitudes and disposition to address them. They are a forum through which students can reach out to influence each other and engage their parents and neighborhood communities to promote sound environmental behavior. Hence, as suggested by Deptt. of School Education and Literacy, Ministry of Education, to organize summer camps during the summer vacations on the theme "Eco Clubs for Mission LIFE:

    • The activities should start on World Environment Day i.e. on 5th June 2024

    • The activities should be conducted for one week, keeping in mind the theme of this year "Land restoration, desertification and drought resilience " of this year.

    • Activities must be devoting one day to each of the seven themes of 'Mission LiFE' viz.

    PRE-VOCATIONAL & VOCATIONAL EDUCATION ( NCERT )

The National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 has laid emphasis on vocational education and skill development, and highlighted the need for providing vocational exposure to at least 50% students through school and higher education by 2025.

In order to provide a national platform for access to teaching-learning resources (print and digital) on vocational education, a separate vertical has been created on DIKSHA. The teaching-learning resources created by PSS Central Institute of Vocational Education (PSSCIVE), a constituent unit of NCERT located at Bhopal, have been uploaded on this site.
